Mexican fishing, an immense activity like the sea

Fishing work is undoubtedly an incredible activity, it is also one of the main economic activities in the world, it is a means of survival and professional exercise.

Mexico has more than 11 thousand kilometers of coastline where we can fish, which takes us to the 17th position in fishery production in the world; Likewise, we have 12 percent of the world's biodiversity and 2,000 endemic species inhabit Mexican seas.

The more than 162 thousand men and women dedicated to this activity contribute to food security in three ways: they directly increase the food supply, provide highly nutritious animal proteins, and generate jobs, as well as economic income.

More than 2 million tons of fish are caught on the Mexican coasts, including sardines, shrimp, mojarra and tuna; These are the best known and also the most eaten, but other fish are also an important part of our diet: ribbon, rabbit, lebrancha, horse mackerel, cojinuda, sea bream, sierra, wahoo, flag dogfish, trout, catfish, carp, jolote and black bass.

Within the framework of World Fisheries Day, it should be noted that fishery production in Mexico remains stable and in some cases is growing; however, in order to take advantage of resources in a responsible and sustainable manner, it is important to observe the technical opinions of researchers who work for the sector and, above all, to reinforce management actions to promote the use of fishing and aquaculture resources. in the country.
